Abbey of St Walburga Visit
While attending the Estes Park Wool Market, two weeks ago Chris, Marie and I planned a visit to see our friend Julie Headlee. Sister Julia is doing great. The life of a nun in training is agreeing with her and she is very happy and very busy. The Abbey life is demanding but rewarding for those who live there. It is seen on their faces. They all have an incredible amount of energy. They were very gracious to us as visitors as well putting us up in a wonderful “guest house” nestled in the mountains. The first night there just before the sun went down, we looked out the window and looking in at us were a group of four deer staring in the window at us! It was like out of a movie. The setting of the Abbey is very beautiful and unspoiled. On the property are cattle, chickens, two very friendly dogs, a half dozen llama. Julie is making cheese and we sent her the supplies that she needed to make it easier. She said the first cheese was referred to as Walburga “fromage” and the second was closer to cardboard. I think she mentioned that the most recent was more like Asiago. Practice, practice practice! We also attended the beautiful services that the nuns take part in daily and did some hiking and a got to spend some time with Sister Julia as well. She is hopefully taking her first vows in September and will get her new name at that time as well. She says “hello!”
CREATIVE HAND
The Creative Hand show and sale is a co-op show for members of the Fiber Guild and Weaver's Guild of Kansas City. The 2008 show will be at the Sylvester Powell Community Center in Merriam, KS November 21 and 22. We had a banner year in 2007 with an increase in participating artists, increase in customer attendance, and a healthy increase in sales. We are looking forward to another successful sale in 2008.
Application Forms are being revised for 2008 and are not quite ready for distribution. When the final details have been worked out, the application form will be distributed to past Creative Hand artists and will be available on the web site. The application forms will be available by the May meetings of Fiber Guild and Weaver's Guild. Here is what we know so far:
So, look for the application form and further information about Creative Hand sometime around the May meetings. Call me if you have any questions.

From the editor... Well, it has been a month and two festivals for me. I have been to Sedalia, attending and vending at the Missouri sheep and wool fest which after much publicity attendance was down significantly. It was a fun time and there was plenty to do. I did see more fiber guild members from KC there and I think they had a good time. It was just a different year. We need to find a way to contact the young 20-30 year olds. Lower gas prices would also be helpful! Then two weeks later was Estes Park Wool Market. Two days of workshops and then two days of vendors and animal sheerings, showings, etc. The people were everywhere of all ages watching animal classes, eating and most of all shopping the market. There were many times that some booths were just too backed up and lines out into the walkway! It was great to see that somewhere there was a show well attended and people were buying. There was a young lady that was barely able to move her fingers and she was in a wheelchair but she was buying fiber to spin for herself! Little kids were felting at a felting table to try needle felting. It was nice to get away from the news about gas and real estate craziness to just relax and walk around in the setting of the mountains surrounding the town of Estes Park, CO! Did I mention the mountains? I hope everyone is getting some relief from the worries of our country now. Go to a Festival, or just set aside some special time for yourself during a “staycation” Try something different and then bring it to guild so we can all see it. Have a great month….. Debbie |
