DYE WORKSHOP

Hi Everyone,
We have an update on the Dye Tricks Workshop.  There are still a few slots left, so if you are not a weaver and want to dye some yarn to knit, we can fit you in.
You can dye cotton, rayon, linen or any combination of these in skeins.  This will be "cold water" dying, so wool and silk will not do well.  You can even over dye the weird orange you got on sale all those years ago.  On Sunday, we will do painted skeins.  Please email Wendy (see below) to sigh up and send her a $50.00 check, payable to: WEAVERS GUILD OF KC by May 10, to hold your spot.  The $10 material fee will be due at the class on Sat.  Cash is appreciated.  Please call me if you have any other questions:913-492-9023.
Thanks, Lolly

Details for the dye tricks workshop

Attendees will need to bring an apron and rubber gloves,  prepared warp and weft yarns, and three 1- gallon zip lock bags.

Please email Wendy Borders,  wendy054@yahoo.com  to sign up. Payment may be made on the day of the workshop which will be held in the Rose Room at Loose Park at 9:30 to 4pm Saturday and 10am to 2pm on Sunday.

If you know a Guild member who may not get this email, please give her a call with the information.

CREATIVE HAND

The Creative Hand show and sale is a co-op show for members of the Fiber Guild and Weaver's Guild of Kansas City.  The 2008 show will be at the Sylvester Powell Community Center in Merriam, KS November 21 and 22.  We had a banner year in 2007 with an increase in participating artists, increase in customer attendance, and a healthy increase in sales.  We are looking forward to another successful sale in 2008.

Application Forms are being revised for 2008 and are not quite ready for distribution.  When the final details have been worked out, the application form will be distributed to past Creative Hand artists and will be available on the web site.  The application forms will be available by the May meetings of Fiber Guild and Weaver's Guild.  Here is what we know so far:
bulletAll artists in Creative Hand must be current members of Fiber Guild or Weaver's Guild and live in Kansas or Missouri.
bulletApplication/Entry fees are in two tiers: New category this year: "Limited Production" artists pay a $10 entry fee and can have up to 5 items in the show.  As in previous years: "Full Production" artists pay a $50 entry fee and can have unlimited number of items in the show.  Duplicate items from any one artist may be held in back stock and replenished as items are sold.  Application forms and fees are due July 31, 2008.
bulletNew artists will need to have their body of work juried by the jury committee.
bulletReturning artists will need to have new work juried by the jury committee.
bulletEach artist is required to work on a committee to help run the show.  This is a co-op show, we need help from all artists to make the show happen.
bullet"Limited Production" artists are required to work one shift and "Full Production" artists are required to work two shifts during the show.
bulletTo pay our rent, publicity and other expenses, each sold item will have 18% of the retail price retained by Creative Hand.  The remaining 82% will be paid to the artist.
bulletEach artist is required to help break down the show when it is over and attend the wrap-up meeting held immediately after break down.
So, look for the application form and further information about Creative Hand sometime around the May meetings.  Call me if you have any questions.

Johnson County Developmental Supports(JCDS) is looking for volunteers

to help them with an art activity. JCDS employees hope to design and market
tote bags which have been painted, stenciled or otherwise decorated by
individuals who are developmentally disabled and are employed at the
sheltered workshop. Some of these individuals have already participated in
art therapy programs producing some very impressive art pieces. Using
their original art as a design for decorating the bags, the plan is to
market high quality tote bags as an environmental-friendly alternative to
plastic grocery or discount store shopping bags. JCDS will provide the
canvas bags and all the supplies. JCDS hopes to find someone with a
background in art or fiber arts to assist them one or two afternoons per
week. Please contact Beth Stockwell at 913-826-2342 for more information.

WebsitePlease check out our website that is up to date thanks to Deb Hillen. You can find it at: www.kansascityfiberguild.org
We are now trading newsletters with the Fiber Artists of Oaklahoma. Here is the website where you can click and find out other events going on in our South neighbors area! Thanks Kay for trading!

For Sale or Wanted

  From the editor...
Last weekend I attended the All Missouri Spin In in Chillicothe Missouri which was about an hour an a half away from my house in Overland Park. It was a great event, there were vendors lots of spinners in the square and I met some new interesting people at the event. Fiber people are like a tribe, once you meet someone who is into the fiber arts of knitting, spinning weaving dying, etc. you have a bond of sisterhood and (sometimes brotherhood as well!) You always have something to talk about. Maybe you might whip out your project dujour and show it off to another fiber addict! It is just an amazing thing. People are always friendly and this is one of the first events of the season. There was Jeff City last month, then the spin in and the next one that I know of is Sedalia at the end of this month. Try to attend some this season or if on vacation across this country try to see if that town is offering one. Last year, I attended Taos Wool Festival while in New Mexico. It was quite an experience. This summer, I am going with two of my "fiber sisters" to see the Estes Park Wool Market and also to visit a true sister. Sister Julia Headlee who is now living as a nun in Virginia Dale, CO. Many of you will remember Julie! I have heard that she is really into making cheese!
As we get into vacation season, everyone have a great time and many will probably not go too far due to the gas issue but do try to attend one of these wonderful festivals to keep them alive. They are wonderful and are great for getting new ideas even if you just walk around and see what people are working on. Classes are interesting too. Always good to learn new things!
