Johnson
County Developmental Supports(JCDS) is looking for volunteers
to help them
with an art activity. JCDS employees hope to design and market
tote bags which have been painted, stenciled or otherwise decorated by individuals who are developmentally disabled and are employed at the sheltered workshop. Some of these individuals have already participated in art therapy programs producing some very impressive art pieces. Using their original art as a design for decorating the bags, the plan is to market high quality tote bags as an environmental-friendly alternative to plastic grocery or discount store shopping bags. JCDS will provide the canvas bags and all the supplies. JCDS hopes to find someone with a background in art or fiber arts to assist them one or two afternoons per week. Please contact Beth Stockwell at 913-826-2342 for more information. WebsitePlease check out our website that is up to date thanks to Deb Hillen. You can find it at: www.kansascityfiberguild.org
We are now
trading newsletters with the Fiber Artists of Oaklahoma. Here is the website
where you can click and find out other events going on in our South neighbors
area! Thanks Kay for trading!

From
the editor...
Last weekend I
attended the All
Missouri Spin In in Chillicothe Missouri which was about an hour an a
half away from my house in
Overland Park. It was a great event, there were vendors lots of
spinners in the square and I met some new interesting people at the event.
Fiber people are like a tribe, once you meet someone who is into the fiber
arts of knitting, spinning weaving dying, etc. you have a bond of sisterhood
and (sometimes brotherhood as well!) You always have something to talk about.
Maybe you might whip out your project dujour and show it off to another fiber
addict! It is just an amazing thing. People are always friendly and this is
one of the first events of the season. There was Jeff City last month, then
the spin in and the next one that I know of is Sedalia at the end of this
month. Try to attend some this season or if on vacation across this country
try to see if that town is offering one. Last year, I attended Taos Wool
Festival while in
New Mexico. It was quite an experience. This summer, I am going with
two of my "fiber sisters" to see the Estes Park Wool Market and also to visit
a true sister. Sister Julia Headlee who is now living as a nun in Virginia
Dale, CO. Many of you will remember Julie! I have heard that she is really
into making cheese!
As we get into
vacation season, everyone have a great time and many will probably not go too
far due to the gas issue but do try to attend one of these wonderful festivals
to keep them alive. They are wonderful and are great for getting new ideas
even if you just walk around and see what people are working on. Classes are
interesting too. Always good to learn new things!
