July 2010 Fiber Guild NewsletterFiber Guild of Greater Kansas City
It is easy to say how we love new friends, and what we think of
them, but words can never trace out all the fibers that knit us to the old.

Also, Karen McNaughton will do a demonstration of Crazy Batts as well as show
some of her fun batts and fabulous finished projects using these creative
fibers!

Hillcrest
Studio. Her program will give us the highlights of her experiences as a
student at Hillcreek Fiber Studio in Columbia, Missouri.
If you’re in the Fiber Guild, you’re welcome to attend Weaver’s
Guild meetings!! Be sure to check out their website at

for news you don’t find in our newsletter, but that just might interest you!
New Felter’s Guild
Fab Felters was formed in February and
meetings are typically on the last Saturday of the month. Check out the
Weaver’s Guild website for details of upcoming meetings. We've been discussing
a group show, possibly in October. Donna Putman has contacted a couple of
gallery owners in the Englewood area of
Independence. They would
like to have some pictures of members' work so they can see what kinds of
things we do. They will want to select the pieces that we show. If you would
like your work to be considered, start by sending Donna digital images of your
work at
dputnam.fiber.art@gmail.com

Important Creative Hand Updates:
At the Fiber Guild meeting on Wednesday, June 9, we had a lively and
healthy discussion about the 4 booths in the Creative Hand show. The
discussion centered around the booths and the footprint they occupy compared
to the floor space occupied by the various fiber departments. The show of
hands vote was tallied thusly:
So, Option B is the way we will operate by vote of the member
artists. The set-up committee chaired by Susan Hoisington and Judy Santner
will work with the board to provide a set-up plan with some major revisions.
The discussion at the meeting revealed many ideas about how to use the
existing floor space to maximize product display. The Fashion Show and
Demonstration areas will be reduced significantly to allow more fiber
department product display.
Thanks to all artists who came to the meeting and participated in
the discussion. Our show will grow in a positive direction because of your
input.
Application forms for the Creative Hand show are available on the
Fiber Guild website
www.kansascityfiberguild.org. Application deadline is
July 31.

Dust off those projects
(you know which ones)
and come to the summer retreat!!
It’s Time for the Summer Women’s
Fiber Guild Retreat!!
The annual Women’s Fiber Guild Retreat is July 30, 31 and August 1,
at the Cohen Retreat Center in Cleveland Missouri (which is about 25 minutes
from Overland Park, Kansas).
This is a weekend to bring out your fiber projects that you want to
work on without interruptions from family and pets.
Cleveland Retreat Center
is located on 200 acres including two small lakes and walking areas. There is
an outdoor gazebo area where you can spin or knit outside and look out onto
the lake if you want. Or, you can spend the whole time indoors immersed in
your projects. Your only responsibility is to help with one meal.
The Cohen Retreat Center has indoor plumbing, showers, toilets, dorm
beds. The building is heated and air conditioned and has an industrial kitchen
and ice machine.
The retreat begins
on
Friday at 3 pm and ends
on Sunday at 3 pm. We are responsible to leave the place the same or
better than we found it so clean up is needed from everyone. Just bring out
your own beverage, bedding, projects, snacks, and mess kit (fork, knife,
spoon, cup, bowl, and plate). The meals provided (with coffee and tea all
weekend) are:
Friday night snacks, Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner, Sunday
continental breakfast and leftovers for lunch.
Additional things to bring are flashlights, ear plugs, (some people
snore; Hmmm do you know anyone who snores in our group??) Bring your own
personal stuff. Stuff not to bring is pets, husbands, or children unless they
are over 30. This is open to KC Weavers Guild and Fiber Guild; (and last time
we had some Lawrence Guild participants).
This past February’s retreat was a ton of fun and we had a record
amount attending…so please RSVP as soon as possible to Debbie Dubinsky at
spindeb@aol.com. Debbie can give you directions as
well.
Phone service is spotty to say the least.
Verizon and possibly
Sprint may have coverage out there.
AT & T does not work. Calls are long distance from the retreat, so the
retreat number is for emergencies only. There is also no wireless coverage out
there so just leave your laptops and other techie stuff, and bring out the old
fashioned hands-on projects…you can also catch up on your reading in between
projects!!
Looking forward to another great retreat!

Fiber Events and
Fun Stuff to Do!!
Valerie Doran Bashaw
Of Woven Winds Studio
Our very own Fiber Build member Valerie Doran has 10 new works at
Shawnee Mission Medical Center!!
They are on the lower level in the hall which connects the older part and the
new wing, by an outdoor garden. The pieces are shibori and resist-dyed silk,
strips are sewn together, stretched over deep frames. The show is titled,
“Anna’s Garden” in memory of her mother who passed away a year ago. The show
is up for 6 months and all the pieces in it are new and the largest of
anything Valerie has done.
Leavenworth
Fiber Festival
Matt Nowak reports that the Fiber Festival scheduled for
Saturday, August 21 at the Heritage Center in Leavenworth is off to a
good start. There are enough vendors and demonstrators to have the festival,
but more are welcome to come and join the fun!
Remember, there are 25,000+ retired military and about 4,000 active
duty military in the Leavenworth area that we have the potential to introduce
to the fiber arts…plus all of our regular customers in the KC Metro area. This
promises to be a fantastic festival!!

Shawnee Indian Mission’s
Fall Festival -
October 9 and 10, 2010
They are now accepting vendor/living history applications for the
event. This year’s theme is “Count Down to Kansas Statehood”. There will be
great entertainment, plus four performances of, “Citizens of Our Cemetery”, an
original play that was presented May 1 & 2 during Fiber Fest.
The Fiber Guild has a long history with the Mission and they would
love to have our support! Contact Anita for more information:
Prayer Shawls
for Hospice
I’ve been contacted by a local hospice that would appreciate
donations of prayer shawls…woven, knitted, or crocheted. The patients who
receive these are comforted by them and the shawls give families lasting
memories of their loved ones after they pass away. You can just bring me your
shawls any time at Fiber Guild meetings. There are many free patterns on the
Internet, plus books on
Amazon.com, etc. My
family just received the services of hospice to help when my dad was dying and
I am a big believer in their services. Let me know if you have questions.
Thanks.
