September fiber Guild News

Guild Meeting for September

At the Shawnee Indian Mission 7 pm Wednesday September 10th.

The program will be Lin Walker sharing her collection of limited edition, handmade
books that have been generated by a group I belong to called the
Sumptuous Book Circle.  In 2004, Shereen LaPlantz, one of the pioneers
in the book arts, taught what would be her final class in bookmaking at
Split Rock Arts in Duluth, MN.  There were sixteen of us in the class
and at the time we decided to do a book exchange the next year for
those who were interested.  We are from all over the United States.
How it works is this - you sign up for a month and during that month
you make a limited edition (depending on how many were in the group and
how many extras you wanted) of a hand bound "book."  (I will tell you
here - many of them challenge the definition of what most people think
a book is.  For us the definition is "information presented
sequentially.")  Shereen passed away less than a month after the class
- she was quite ill during the class itself.  Our book circle has
continued - we are now on our fifth year.  People drop in and drop out
depending on their circumstances but we have never had less than 12
participate in any given exchange.  I will also show some elementary
bookbinding - the pamphlet stitch and some Japanese stab binding
techniques.  I will show some examples of coptic bound books but won't
try to demo that in the time frame we have.  If I get my act together
(two of my children got married this summer, two weeks apart - I'm
still reeling) I will demo a quick, cheap way to make beautiful paper
for covering bookboard.

-Lin Walker

NOMADS OF ANATOLIA by Dr. Harald Boehmer.
JCCC Scholar-in-Residence
7 p.m. Sat, Sept. 13, 2008
Hudson Auditorium, Nerman Museum of Art
Johnson County Community College

College Blvd. and Quivera
Overland Park, KS
In 1978, German chemist, Dr. Harald Boehmer
sparked "The Great Anatolian Rug Revolution",
transforming the entire Turkish rug industry.
Even more than an industrial revolution, it has
become a cultural survival project that has
restored the ancient art of handwoven carpets
and established the first ever woman's rug
weaving cooperative in the Islamic world.
A second and different program for students will
be held on Monday, Sept. 15,2008 at 11 a.m. in
GEB 233, the "little theater".  Guild members
have been invited to this program also.
Dr. Boehmer is an expert on ancient dyes,
so we hope he will speak to the students
on this.
Both events are free.

CREATIVE HAND Postcards Art is Out!

The Creative Hand show and sale is a co-op show for members of the Fiber Guild and Weaver's Guild of Kansas City.  The 2008 show will be at the Sylvester Powell Community Center in Merriam, KS November 21 and 22.  We had a banner year in 2007 with an increase in participating artists, increase in customer attendance, and a healthy increase in sales.  We are looking forward to another successful sale in 2008.

Postcard Art is out, Sandy sent this to all participating artists in the past week or so. Call her if you have any questions or did not receive the email with the postcard art.

Check out Website: Ravelry

I am sure that many of you have heard of Raverlry but I would like to suggest that you check it out. I recently learned about it at the Missouri Wool Fest this summer. It is an interesting place to search for patterns some of which are free. You can see how different yarns look in some patterns. It is mostly a knitting website that all contribute to. They have a place for all kinds of projects to look at and have reviews for them as well. You can even organize your projects and your yarn stash online if you want to. You can also buy and sell on Ravelry. There is much to check out and you can spend hours online looking at the stuff.  Good to check out if you cannot sleep one night!! I will warn you that you do have to apply to be able to take advantage of this. I am told that it took weeks at one time to get access to the site. I applied one day and had my acceptance codes within a day.

 It is www.Ravelry.com!

 From the editor...

This has been a crazy  month for me after our office was flooded. When you have Indian Creek at your back door you can expect that at some time it might get in your way. This time it got us! Thanks to all of you who called. It was nice to hear from you during our mess! Now it is all put back together and clean and fresh!

Had not been able to do much knitting or spinning this month, but I am going to proclaim that September is “Put your studio back in order” month! I am in the process of moving my studio from one room to another in my house and in the process I am going to thin out stuff that I have not touched for months, years maybe even a decade! I am going to gain a guest room and a studio after we are done sine my house has gotten bigger over the past years with our three sons moving out to go to college and not returning to our nest! It is fun to look through old magazines and cut up those I do not feel a sacred bond to like some knitting magazines. I am going cut out what I want to keep and put them in a notebook so as not to take up so much time. Many times I hang onto those magazines for one pattern and why take up the space if you can consolidate! (I personally, would not cut up any of my “Spin Off’s) They all remain intact! I intend to organize and make this studio of mine back into a studio and not just a big walk in closet! Maybe I will find something interesting to bring to show and tell next month!

Have a great month…..

Debbie

From the editor...
Crocuses and Daphodils are showing that spring is just around the corner even though it still feels pretty cold for April. the best part of this time of the year for me though means that many fiber festivals are just around the corner. Last year I attended the Taos Wool Festival in New Mexico and it was well worth the trip but it also showed me that we have a great festival right in our backyard offering something for every fiber artist. If you want to save on gas then carpool but do try to attend the Missouri Wool and Sheep Festival in Sedalia at the end of May. It has changed in the past few years and gotten much bigger and everything is in the swine barn which has open sides  but is totally shaded and covered. The new layout that began last year offers a long row of classes so you can see what is offered, then next to that is a long row of vendors and arenas where competitions for the animals are held and then there are all of the wonderful sheep and goats that are there, some even get their summer haircuts at the show! Sometimes you will see pens with humans sleeping next to their prized sheep and goats! This is a wonderful place to bring the kids to. There are kids classes as well as adult classes on knitting, spinning animal husbandry. And, don't forget to bring that favorite fiber item that you have just spun up or knitted, woven or felted and enter it in the fiber arts competition. The people are friendly and you don't have to pay to get in. I stress this in this newsletter because I think it is a wonderful festival and because attendance was very poor last year. We are hoping that this year will be better! Tell your friends and we will see you there!
Everyone have a great April and don't forget to get your taxes filed because when you do and if you qualify for the tax rebates, filing triggers your rebate check which I have heard that most are $600. Think of all the fiber your can buy with $600!!!
