Important Membership News:

January 1, 2010 was the deadline to get your membership application and dues in to be able to participate in the 2010 Creative Hand. However, you can join any time to become a member of the Fiber Guild. You can download an application for the Fiber Guild at:

http://www.kansascityfiberguild.org/fiber%20guild_member_app.pdf

You can also become a member of our “sister guild”, the Weaver’s Guild. They are a separate organization from us, but we share many things in common, including our lending Library. Their website is www.kcweaversguild.org. You can also join by filling in the appropriate information on the application on the Fiber Guild website.

February Calendar:

February Fiber Guild Meeting

 And Creative Hand Meeting

Our February meeting will be Wednesday, February 10 at 7pm the Shawnee Indian Mission North Building (3403 West 53rd Street in Fairway, Kansas on Mission Road – just one block north off of Shawnee Mission Parkway). Come ready for some show and tell! The 2010 membership directories should be ready for pick up that evening.

The first Creative Hand meeting of 2010 will also be that evening at the Shawnee Indian Mission, from 6-7pm. The topic will be “Committee Assignments and the 2010 Calendar”.

The Creative Hand is a COOPERATIVE show, so each artist who participates in it is required to accomplish committee work. We all work together as volunteers to make the show a success. If you are returning artists, this is the perfect time to get involved in the workings of the Creative Hand show and have lots of time to accomplish your committee responsibility. If you are a new artist (thinking of doing the Creative Hand for the first time this year), you will be able to ask questions and find out what the show is all about, plus the added bonus of meeting the artists you will be showing with at the Creative Hand.

If you can’t attend, please contact Sandy Cahill and she will describe the various committee positions and what the work entails.

The Creative Hand is November 19 and 20 at the Holiday Inn at Metcalf and Shawnee Mission Parkway (the same place we had it in 2009).

Sandy is at cahill5505@sbcglobal.net or 913-709-1923 (Cell) or 913-505-5507 (home).

Winter Weather Policy

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…and if other organizations (schools, etc.) have cancelled events due to ice, snow, cold temperatures, etc…so have we. We’ll try to post cancelled meetings and other Guild events on our website as soon as we know they’ll be cancelled.

The Weaver’s Guild meets the second Thursday of each month at 10am at the Waldo Library ( 201 E. 75th Street in Kansas City , Missouri ). Check their website for this month’s meeting topic.

Fiber Guild Women’s Retreat

Sign up now – and when you do, please let Debbie Dubinsky know if you would be willing to purchase some of the food. Sign up by emailing Debbie Dubinsky at spindeb@aol.com SOON!!

We want to try to get an accurate count this year if possible. This is a great chance to have a little R & R ladies. No kids, no pets. Do bring your own bedding, toiletries, special snacks to share or keep to yourself, mess kits and beverages. This year, we will have coffee and tea, and water to cook with. We are trying to cut costs by having everyone bring out their own plates, silverware, cups. No cups, silverware or plates will be available.  If you volunteer to help with food, I need you to bring all cooking utensils in order to make this food as some of the kitchen items have been stolen. We do have the large foil pans.

The building is on 200 acres, with two small lakes and some paths to walk around; the building is heated and has beds! We will have a Friday night snack, all meals on Saturday and breakfast and leftovers for lunch on Sunday before we depart.  We can arrive anytime after 3pm on Friday and we usually leave by 3pm on Sunday.

Everyone helps out in the clean up and helps with one meal. I think that is it. All for the bargain price of $50.00! This is our fiber stimulus package!

This is a great time to bring out your favorite fiber project to finish or to begin!!! Don’t forget to RSVP ASAP! The deadline to register is the week before the event. Hope to see you there!

Get Massaged at the Retreat!!

The masseuse we had last year at the retreat will be back this year!! Treat yourself to a 15 minute ($15), 30 minute ($30) or 60 minute ($60) massage You need to schedule these ahead of time and can do so by contacting Marie Pickard at 816-510-2305 or via email at chezpickard@sbcglobal.net.

Opportunities Fiber Events

KAWS 2010

KAWS– the Kansas Alliance of Weavers and Spinners – will hold its annual Conference in Emporia this year, on April 30 – May 2. The theme is “May Mixer”. The keynote speaker has not yet been announced.

The Guild exhibit will be “ Champagne and Chocolate” and everyone is invited to participate in this. It is important to stick with the theme and the parameters set for making items as follows:

All items must be made from at least 75% un-dyed fibers. This will give us a variety of off-whites and tans that will resemble champagne in a range of browns and blacks that will resemble chocolate. You must try something new when creating these items.

The samples will be very small – use no more than ˝ ounce of fiber. Batts or roving should fit into a martini glass; finished objects should fit into a muffin tin.

Examples of finished items might be needle-felted chocolate-dipped fruit, very small lace doilies that resemble cookies, small bits of handmade lace to place around the edge of a martini glass to represent salt, sugar or cocoa, etc.

Light colored skeins will be used to create a champagne fountain; dark colored yarns will be used to represent chocolate martinis. The remaining items will be treated as if they are bon-bons or chocolate candies, and displayed on gold muffin papers on the table.

Each guild member is welcome to bring up to 3 items for the table. Leslie McLaughlin will set up our display at KAWS. Bring each item with a paper attached with a safety pin giving your name, a brief description of the item, and what it was that you tried for the first time.   All items are due at the April guild meeting (April 14).

Leslie will have small packets of novelty fibers at the retreat in February that we can use to try our hand at spinning something new (or in a new way).

More information will be available during Fiber Guild meetings, or you can contact Leslie McLaughlin, Lolly Buxton, or see KAWS’ website at:

www.kansasweavers.com/calendar2.htm .

Wanted:

Wanted: hand carders and/or a sturdy, small, easy to use spinning wheel.  I teach for a nonprofit organization called Accessible Arts, we provide arts opportunities for students with disabilities in the state of Kansas .

We are based on the grounds of the Kansas School for the Blind (KSSB) in downtown KC, KS.  I co-teach students from KSSB once a week with an artist friend who is also visually impaired.  Most of our students, all high school age, have at least some vision and they absolutely love fiber processes, including sewing on a machine and weaving.

We have several bags of donated llama fur and I would love to be able to process it and make felt, and feel that spinning could well suit some of these students.  As you all know, funding for nonprofits seems to decrease more each year.  If you know of any resources, please call me or email.

Many thanks, Valerie Bashaw,
