January 2010 Fiber Guild Newsletter

Fiber Guild of Greater Kansas City

The creative is the place where no one else has ever been.

You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. Anonymous

By now, most of us have recovered from the fantastic Creative Hand 2009!! We did an overwhelming amount of sales (over $31,000)…which proves to us that people love to buy creative, hand made items, and that every ounce of energy we put into creating these things is worth it!! So, let’s all start our new year with a creative hand (or two) and see what we gather for show and tell at Fiber Guild meetings, for the Creative Hand in November, and for all the other endeavors we display, demo, sell, and give to.

News from the Board

Several members of the Board met in December to finalize 2009 business, and to discuss the new year. Everyone is enthusiastic about the year ahead, and there are many ideas for programs in 2010. We promise to have times for show and tell throughout the year, recognizing that it is fun and inspiring to share our ideas and creations with each other! If you have ideas for programs that you’d like to see at a meeting, contact Karen McNaughton, Vice President, on Facebook or bring them up during a monthly meeting. We want to give a special thank you to all who served on the board in 2009!!

January Calendar:

Fiber Guild – typically meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Shawnee Indian Mission’s North Building, 3403 West 53rd Street in Fairway, Kansas.

January’s meeting is January 12. The theme is our annual “Swap ‘n Shop” night. So brave the cold and bring your new and gently used fiber-related items to sell or trade…items might include yarn and other fibers, patterns, magazines, knitting, crochet and felting supplies, spinning materials, embellishments, books, and more!!

The Weaver’s Guild meets the second Thursday of each month at 10am at the Waldo Library ( 201 E. 75th Street in Kansas City , Missouri ). Check their website for this month’s meeting topic.

Fiber Guild Women’s Retreat

Mark your calendars now for the 2010 Winter Women’s Retreat at the Cohen Retreat Center in Cleveland Missouri ! Enjoy 48 hours of working on your favorite fiber projects, relaxing, eating and doing your own thing. The Women's Retreat is set up to begin at 3pm on February 19, and ends at 3pm on Sunday (February 21).

Sign up now – and when you do, please let Debbie Dubinsky know if you would be willing to purchase some of the food. Sign up by emailing Debbie Dubinsky at spindeb@aol.com ASAP.

We want to try to get an accurate count this year if possible. This is a great chance to have a little R & R ladies. No kids, no pets. Do bring your own bedding, toiletries, special snacks to share or keep to yourself, mess kits and beverages. This year, we will have coffee and tea, and water to cook with. We are trying to cut costs by having everyone bring out their own plates, silverware, cups. No cups, silverware or plates will be available. If you volunteer to help with food, I need you to bring all cooking utensils in order to make this food as some of the kitchen items have been stolen. We do have the large foil pans.

The building is on 200 acres, with two small lakes and some paths to walk around; the building is heated and has beds! We will have a Friday night snack, all meals on Saturday and breakfast and leftovers for lunch on Sunday before we depart. We can arrive anytime after 3pm on Friday and we usually leave by 3pm on Sunday. Everyone helps out in the clean up and helps with one meal. I think that is it. All for the bargain price of $50.00! This is our fiber stimulus package!

This is a great time to bring out your favorite fiber project to finish or to begin!!! Don’t forget to RSVP ASAP!! Hope to see you there!

Debbie Dubinsky

Winter Weather Policy

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…and if other organizations (schools, etc.) have cancelled events due to ice, snow, cold temperatures, etc…so have we. We’ll try to post cancelled meetings and other Guild events on our website as soon as we know they’ll be cancelled.

Have You Any Wool?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and idea in which the individual can invest $$ in a farm and share in the yield. If you knit, crochet, or spin you have almost certainly dreamed of owning your very own flock of sheep or goats. Unfortunately, living in the City (or even the suburbs) makes it very hard to get in touch with your inner Little Bo Peep. What’s a would-be shepherdess to do?

A Yarn CSA can make your dream a reality! One such organization is Juniper Moon Farm on Martha’s Vineyard  is  home to a herd of lovely angora goats, some fat, spoiled sheep, two Maremma livestock guardian dogs, and the world’s first yarn CSA. You can purchase a share of the clip and they’ll take care of all the tedious details (like trimming hoofs, feeding during snowstorms and cleaning all the poopy hay out of the barn.)

Here’s How it Works: When you purchase a share in our CSA you are investing in their 2010 “yarn harvest”. You’ll receive a shareholders certificate, weekly farm updates on what’s going on around the farm, and an invitation to our Shearing Day Celebration.

After shearing, workers at the mill work their magic and in a few months you’ll receive your share of the harvest. The number of skeins, yardage, etc., will depend on the size of the clip; they do limit the number of shareholders so that everyone gets a bountiful supply.
