Important Membership News:

January 1, 2010 was the deadline to get your membership application and dues in to be able to participate in the 2010 Creative Hand. However, you can join any time to become a member of the Fiber Guild. You can download an application for the Fiber Guild at:

http://www.kansascityfiberguild.org/fiber%20guild_member_app.pdf

You can also become a member of our “sister guild”, the Weaver’s Guild. They are a separate organization from us, but we share many things in common, including our lending Library. Their website is www.kcweaversguild.org. You can also join by filling in the appropriate information on the application on the Fiber Guild website.

March Calendar:

March Monthly Fiber Guild Meeting…We’ve Got a New Meeting Space!!

Due to our increase in membership, we have found we need a larger meeting space.  Old Mission United Methodist Church has agreed to host our meetings for the rest of 2010 starting March 10

The address is 5519 State Park Rd , Fairway , KS 66205 . The church parking lot is accessible from State Park Road which is 1/2 block east of Mission Road on the south side of Shawnee Mission Parkway .  The north door of the church has parking space and is closest to our meeting room. Parking overflow can go to the lot on the west side of the church and can use the west door with a portico. Direction signs will be posted within the building from either entry to the conference room.

We will meet at the usual 7pm time for the first meeting. Since we are only able to meet until 9pm, we will vote on a change to an earlier meeting time at the March 10 meeting. We think everyone will enjoy the new space!

Did you pick up your 2010 Directory at the last meeting?

If not, let Lolly Buxton know (itsewe@everestkc.net). If you know of additions or corrections to it, please let Lolly know those too.

Note these updates to the directory:

1. “Fiber Guild Past Presidents” – delete Cheryl Marsden 1991-92 “member list”

2. Change Marci Blank’s email to thred_head@yahoo.com

3. Christy Berry’s business name is Cristae Textiles

4. Elizabeth Kontra’s business name is “Saddle Chic Hardwear”; please delete her evening phone number

5. Sheri McNeil – delete her work number

Winter Weather Policy

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…and if other organizations (schools, etc.) have cancelled events due to ice, snow, cold temperatures, etc…so have we. We’ll try to post cancelled meetings and other Guild events on our website as soon as we know they’ll be cancelled.

The Weaver’s Guild meets the second Thursday of each month at 10am at the Waldo Library ( 201 E. 75th Street in Kansas City , Missouri ). Check their website (www.kcweaversguild.org) for this month’s meeting topic. If you’re in the Fiber Guild, you’re welcome to attend Weaver’s Guild meetings!! Be sure to check out their website for news you don’t find in our newsletter…but that just might interest you!

New Felter’s Guild

Fab Felters was formed in February for anyone interested in this medium. Felting is versatile, as we’re finding out…from  hot water felting, to needle felting, to…well, the sky’s the limit when it comes to being crafty and creative with felt!!

Meetings are the last Saturdays of the month at various people’s homes. Check the Weaver’s Guild website   -

www.kcweaversguild.org  - for meeting locations and updates on this newly forming guild. Founding group members are from the Weavers Guild of Greater KC - Judy Santer, Carol Ann Parker, and Becky Stevens.  Members of our Fiber Guild are also welcome. Contact Judy, Carol Ann or Becky if you have questions (numbers are in the Directory).

Opportunities - Fiber Events

KAWS 2010

KAWS– the Kansas Alliance of Weavers and Spinners – will hold its annual Conference in Emporia this year, on April 30 – May 2. The theme is “May Mixer”. The keynote speaker has not yet been announced.

The overall theme at the exhibit will be “ Champagne and Chocolate” and everyone is invited to participate in this. It is important to stick with the theme and the parameters set for making items as follows:

All items must be made from at least 75% un-dyed fibers. This will give us a variety of off-whites and tans that will resemble champagne in a range of browns and blacks that will resemble chocolate. You must try something new when creating these items.

The samples will be very small – use no more than ˝ ounce of fiber. Batts or roving should fit into a martini glass; finished objects should fit into a muffin tin.

Examples of finished items might be needle-felted chocolate-dipped fruit, very small lace doilies that resemble cookies, small bits of handmade lace to place around the edge of a martini glass to represent salt, sugar or cocoa, etc.

Light colored skeins will be used to create a champagne fountain; dark colored yarns will be used to represent chocolate martinis. The remaining items will be treated as if they are bon-bons or chocolate candies, and displayed on gold muffin papers on the table.

Each guild member is welcome to bring up to 3 items for the table. Leslie McLaughlin will set up our display at KAWS. Bring each item with a paper attached with a safety pin giving your name, a brief description of the item, and what it was that you tried for the first time.   All items are due at the April Fiber or Weaver Guild’s meetings.

More information will be available during Fiber Guild meetings, or you can contact Leslie McLaughlin, Lolly Buxton, or see KAWS’ website at:

www.kansasweavers.com/calendar2.htm .

Important KAWS Update: if you are not able to access the KAWS registration information via their website, please

let Leslie McLaughlin know -

(leslie.mclaughlin@umb.com) -  if you are a Fiber Guild member, or Lolly Buxton -  (itsewe@everestkc.net) - if you are a Weaver’s Guild member; they’ll bring you the info. at the March meeting!!

April Newsletter Deadline

As you know, KAWS is the the same day as is a MissouriTown event at the Shawnee Indian Mission, so we would appreciate area fiber artists to come spend the day or part of the day at the Mission where they can sell their items at no charge and also see our new cemetery play debuting that afternoon. This is the basic info I have on the event:

During Live Woolies to Woolens, fiber artists and area guild members will demonstrate their crafts 10 am-5 pm, Sat., May 1, at Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site. Materials and handmade items will be available to buy. In addition, the Mission will host the exhibit Reflections on the War: Women and Their Civil War Quilts about quilts, textiles, and turbulent times in Kansas as well as an 1800s undergarments exhibit and hooked rug display.

Truly,
Cindy Higgins
cinhiggins@yahoo.com

The newsletter is a great way to find out more about upcoming workshops and artist opportunities, to sell things you no longer need, and more. As you can see, I got a ton of submissions this month!!  Get your voice heard! Please submit information for the April 2010 newsletter to me (your newsletter editor), Suzette Mack, by March 20 (angeldanz@aol.com or 913-485-7744). I will try to remind everyone around the middle of the month, but since I might forget, mark your calendars now.

Also, if your email changes…please let me know!! Be sure to give the incorrect address as well as the new one.

Thanks and have a fantastic March…celebrate something (is anyone hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party??!!) as we head to spring!

You Editor,

Suzette Mack
